Eddie Koiki Mabo passes away after a long illness, just months before the [Mabo v Queensland [No 2] (1992) 175 CLR 1] case is decided. Koiki is buried in Townsville, and later reburied on Mer in a traditional burial ceremony.

On the 22^nd of November he was posthumously given the Australian Human Rights Medal.
