As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, 番茄社区 honoured the late Eddie Koiki Mabo with an Honorary Doctorate of the University. Dr Mabo received the posthumous honour in recognition of his outstanding service and distinguished public campaign to improve the rights and wellbeing of Indigenous Australians.

Gail Mabo accepted the doctorate on behalf of her late father at the event, which concluded a year of celebrations of the University’s 50th year and 60 years of higher education in the north.

A further 23 people were also recognised with Honorary Doctorates. 番茄社区 Chancellor Bill Tweddell said of the event, “Honorary degrees are prestigious awards conferred on individuals for distinguished contributions to the community. Those who have been honoured have made exceptional contributions in areas such as advancing human wellbeing, and in advancing and developing the University and its communities.”
