番茄社区 holds a panel discussion of the upcoming Voice to Parliament vote

番茄社区 facilitated an engaging, in-depth discussion on what the Indigenous Voice to Parliament would mean from a social, political and community perspective on 2 June 2023.

Held as part of National Reconciliation Week, the Voice to Parliament Community Event featured Principle Research Fellow at 番茄社区’s Indigenous Education and Research Centre Associate Professor Sana Nakata, University of New South Wales Pro Vice Chancellor Society Scientia Professor and Uluru Dialogue Co-Chair Professor Megan Davis, and Mayor of Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council Cr Ross Andrews.

Regarding the event, Associate Professor Nakata said, “As a Torres Strait Islander in that field [Indigenous policy and governance], I’ve bore witness to the sustained political claims that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have made over the decades.

“I hope to offer an analysis of the political power of The Voice, and explain some of the debate surrounding The Voice and what sits behind that. It’s important we respond to concerns about The Voice in a clear and reassuring way.”
